Sony transfers photo printing ops to Dai Nippon

November 22, 2010

Sony Corp. and Dai Nippon Printing Co. (DNP) announced that Sony would transfer its professional digital photo printer business, excluding manufacturing, to DNP. DNP will operate the printing of photos in instant photo-printing kiosks and printers for ID photography currently installed by Sony, the two reported.

DNP supplies to photo stores and large retailers dye-sublimation print media for the printing of digital images made by digital cameras and mobile phones with built in cameras. Dye sublimation media allows for the thermal transfer printing of photos, a high-speed method that is used in household photo printers, kiosks and photo ID printers.

The deal is expected to be completed on April 1, 2011, the two firms say. The agreement includes Sony transferring all its active business accounts worldwide in the professional digital photo printer business. Sony employees in this sector will also move to DNP, Sony and DNP announced.
