Shutterfly announced today that it has acquired mobile application developer Penguin Digital Inc. as part of a strategic plan to grow the company's mobile photo offerings.
Penguin Digital's Mobile Photo Factory app, or MoPho, will be rebranded and updated over the next few months and added to Shutterfly's mobile catalogue, which will include the Shutterfly iPhone and iPad apps and the soon to be released Treat birthday card app. With MoPho, which launched in January of this year, users can access photos from their iPhone or their Facebook or Instagram accounts to create products and gifts while on the go, according to the announcement.
"It's exciting to combine our mobile expertise and passion for innovation with Shutterfly's brand, large customer base and manufacturing expertise," said Reuven Moskowitz, CEO of Penguin Digital. "Together, we will truly put the selection and ease of a physical photo kiosk in the pocket of millions of smartphone users."
