Safeway, a supermarket chain that operates 918 stores throughout the U.S., will remove self-checkout kiosks at some of its stores in the San Francisco Bay area, according to a Newsweek report.
"Operational changes have been made at select stores throughout the Bay Area given the increasing amount of theft," a representative for Safeway told the news outlet. "Self-checkout kiosks have ben removed at a few stores. Like other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating theft so we can ensure the well-being of our employees and foster a welcoming environment for our customers."
The move follows other retailers like Walmart removing self-checkouts for the same reason.
The report did not specify which Safeway stores will lose their self-checkout kiosks.
