Self-service still thriving in grocery stores

October 5, 2011

Self-checkout technology will be sticking around in several Massachusetts grocery stores, despite Big Y Foods' recent announcement about removing self-checkout kiosks, after research showed that full-service lanes lead to higher customer satisfaction.

Giant Foods Stores and Weis Markets aren't removing the machines as long as customers continue to use them, according to the York Daily Record.

In fact, the machines at Giant have been such a success that the company is adding a new way for customers to browse and checkout via kiosks.

Chris Brand, manager of community and public relations for the chain, told The Daily Record that customers can check in with their Bonuscard at Easy Shop kiosks when entering the store to pick up scanning devices that scan items as they shop. When finished shopping, customers return to the kiosk, which reads the information in the scanner. After applying coupons, they may also pay through the kiosk.

"(Easy Shop) has lots of fans already," Brand said in the story.
