Self-checkout vendor rolls out new products at trade show

February 24, 2003

MONTREAL -- A dual belt takeaway system leads the list of upgraded self-checkout products on display from Optimal Robotics (NASDAQ: OPMR) at the Food Marketing Institute's Marketechnics trade show in Dallas Feb. 23-25.

The system is designed to accommodate shoppers with large orders. While one customer is scanning and sending items on one belt, another can be bagging purchased items on a second belt. Called the U-ScanMax, it is designed to shorten waiting time for shoppers, according to a news release from the Canadian company.

Optimal, which first offered U-Scan systems to grocery stores in 1995, is offering a scaled-down version of its U-Scan 1 single bagging system designed for remote locations such as food courts, music departments and convenience stores. It is designed for debit and credit card transactions and dispenses cash.

According to the release, Optimal's U-Scan products processed more than 500 million shopper transactions in 2002.
