Select vending kiosks get extension on calorie-label requirement

August 5, 2016

Manufacturers of gum, mints and roll candy vending kiosks are getting a 19-month extension from the Food and Drug Administration to add calorie information to its packaging. The FDA is adding this extension to determine how large the text should be on packaging due to the smaller size of gum, mints and roll candy packaging, according to a report by U.S. News.

The FDA first determined that vending machines should display calorie information in 2014. The FDA also determined that any companies that own 20 vending kiosks have to display calories on a sign or button on the machine. The deadline for calorie labels was extended twice to December 2016, but now, gum, mints and roll candy kiosks won't have to comply until July 2018.

The FDA is also requiring vending kiosks to display the total amount of calories in a package, rather than per serving. The manufacturers of these kiosks are arguing they should be able to display calories by serving, not the entire package since most customers don't consume the entire package at once, according to the report.
