Libraries around the world have started to embrace self-service options, and Edinburgh Central Library in Scotland is no exception.
According to the Edinburgh Guide, touch-screen kiosks are part of the plans to update the 121-year-old George IV Bridge building and will enable up to 12 items to be borrowed in a single transaction.
Self-service is already available at a number of Edinburgh libraries, including Portobello, Newington, Blackhall, McDonald Road and Stockbridge.
The library's entrance hall will also get an upgrade. The entrance barrier currently in place will be replaced with a new security system, and a reception desk will greet library visitors as they arrive. The hall will also be furnished with touch screens to help people orient themselves in the building and keep up to date with events and activities happening in the Central Library.
The kiosk project should be completed by summer 2011.
