Safeway in London trials self-checkout

July 21, 2003

LONDON -- NCR Corp. announced that Safeway PLC has begun a pilot deployment with NCR FastLane self-checkout, allowing customers to scan, bag and pay for goods without cashier assistance at its Horndean store near Portsmouth.

"NCR's FastLane self-checkout is already a customer success," said Ric Francis, Safeway's chief information officer, in a news release. "The extent of customer adoption in such a short period of time means Safeway is considering extending the trial to more locations." See related story, "Research: Shoppers drawn to self-checkout."

The three-month Safeway pilot started this May. The Horndean store will deploy four NCR FastLane self-checkouts located in the center of the traditional checkout lanes, the release said.

"The success of self-checkout among Safeway customers reflects the popularity of NCR FastLane in the rest of Europe and the United States," said Alberto Camuri, vice president of NCR's retail solutions division for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

"Consumer popularity of NCR FastLane is leading to retailers extending their trial deployments."
