OAK BROOK, Ill. - Redbox, provider of automated DVD rental devices, announced in a news release an agreement with Ahold to offer DVD rental kiosks in Stop & Shop supermarkets and Giant Food stores throughout the Northeast United States. Redbox DVD kiosks will begin to appear in Ahold's Stop & Shop and Giant Food locations in March 2006. By the end of June 2006, Redbox will have kiosks installed and ready for use in approximately 80 percent of Stop & Shop and Giant locations - more than 400 stores. The agreement follows a successful 12-month test in 12 Stop & Shop and Giant locations as well as growing momentum and record sales from the Redbox brand.
Each fully automated Redbox DVD rental kiosk holds more than 500 DVDs, representing 50-60 of the newest movie releases, with new titles available every Tuesday. Consumers use a touchscreen to select their favorite movies, swipe a valid credit or debit card and go. For added convenience, customers can keep the DVD for as long as they'd like for $1 per night plus tax, and return the DVD to any Redbox kiosk nationwide.
December 2005 marked the best month of record for Redbox, reporting more than 1.1 million DVD rentals in over 800 locations. In addition, on Nov. 29 in the St. Louis market, Redbox launched sales of Millions of Cardinals Memories: Busch Stadium 1966-2005, a DVD chronicling the St. Louis Cardinals' 40 seasons in Busch Stadium. Redbox's first promotion of a DVD for purchase was highly successful, selling out 25,000 copies in less than a month.
