A vending machine dispensing free Narcan in Red Hook, New York, has become the most frequently used of six such machines in Dutchess County, according to a report by The Daily Catch.
Located at 7467 S. Broadway, the machine serves residents of Red Hook and surrounding communities, offering a way to obtain potentially lifesaving supplies without visiting a pharmacy or health care provider.
The machine is part of a broader overdose prevention initiative operated by Dutchess County in partnership with MATTERS, an initiative that connects people with substance use disorders to treatment and provides resources to prevent drug overdoses. County officials reported that nearly 1,000 Narcan kits had been distributed through the six vending machines as of August 2026. The county has also distributed more than 200 naloxone boxes to businesses and community organizations. The expansion comes as overdose deaths have fallen nearly 50% since 2022, reaching 63 in 2025.
The initiative reflects growing use of unattended dispensing technology to expand access to public health resources. By providing free supplies at any hour, the machines help remove barriers associated with pharmacy hours and face-to-face requests for overdose prevention products. Dutchess County continues to encourage residents to carry naloxone and learn how to administer it, while also offering overdose alerts, training and addiction treatment resources.
