Publix pilots NCR self-checkout program

June 4, 2002

ATLANTA -- Publix Super Markets Inc. is bringing NCR Corp.'s (NYSE: NCR) technology to the checkout lane, piloting its FastLane system in five stores, according to an NCR news release.

The FastLane self-checkout technology is being tested at Publix stores in Tampa, Miami, Tallahassee, and in two Atlanta locations. Customers have appreciated the convenience, Publix spokesman Lee Brunson said.

FastLane can convert from a self-checkout system to cashier-assisted service, according to the release. NCR debuted the model at the Food Marketing Institute's MARKETECHNICS February trade show. According to FMI, 20 percent of food retailers had installed self-checkouts in 2001.

No timeframe for the pilot was given. Publix operates 697 stores in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.
