Polaroid makes instant entrance in photo kiosk market

February 25, 2003

LAS VEGAS - The latest entrant in the business of supplying digital photo kiosks in retail environments is a name with a proud history in photography -- Polaroid Corp.

The instant photography giant will introduce its new digital prints kiosk at the Photo Marketing Association's (PMA) International Annual Convention and Trade Show March 2-5, according to a Polaroid new release.

Polaroid, based in Waltham, Mass., said it would begin installing the kiosks at select locations this quarter. The new machines produce "fast, simple, high-quality photos," which produce 4 x 6 prints at the rate of one print every two seconds. It features a thermal printing platform called "Opal" using what the company calls "frozen ink" technology. Polaroid said it expects to be issued a United States patent for the technology.

The new kiosk is a significant advance compared with the company's kiosk unveiled last fall, according to the release. The kiosk is one of several new products being introduced by Polaroid at PMA.
