The Port Authority of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, is deploying wayfinding kiosks to help commuters navigate the city's bus and, eventually, light rail systems. The organization will install five touchscreen kiosks to provide routes and directions, according to a report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The touchscreen kiosks will offer directions to the nearest transit stop and arrival times for buses, information that can be sent as a text or email to the kiosk user. The Port Authority will also deploy eight solar-powered kiosks that will display real-time bus information, as well as two digital bus stops and 85 bus stop signs.
"We think [a user-friendly system] will bring more and more people into the transit system," said Rich Fitzgerald, an executive with Allegheny county. "More people want to use transit … It's a much easier way to get in and out of town."
Initially, the kiosk will provide information for buses only, with light rail systems integrated later. The authority operates 98 bus routes and three rail lines, according to the report.
