Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney has signed a bill to require stores in his city to take cash, thereby prohibiting cashless stores, according to The Inquirer. The bill, the first of its kind for a major U.S. city, also prohibits most stores from charging a higher price from cash customers.
Advocates of the measure, which takes effect July 1, said it protects low-income residents from discrimination.
City officials said previously that Amazon had advised them the bill would stop the company from building an Amazon Go store in the city. A company spokesperson declined comment.
