City council members in Berkeley, California, have approved the installation of up to 31 kiosks on public sidewalks in the city's shopping district, according to a report by Berkeleyside.
The IKE Smart City kiosks will provide transit information, business listings, interactive maps and public Wi-Fi. The kiosks will also display paid advertising.
The kiosks come at no charge to the city. In fact, they could bring Berkeley an estimated $830,000 annually in advertising revenues, based on performance in comparable installations elsewhere.
The city will receive 10 percent of gross advertising revenues in the first two years and 25 percent thereafter, according to the report.
