NCR lands self-service checkout deal

August 28, 2002

ATLANTA and RICHMOND, Va. -- Self-service checkout technology developed by NCR Corp. (NYSE:NCR) will be utilized in seven Ukrop's Super Markets in the Richmond area, according to an agreement announced on Aug. 29 by NCR.

Ukrop's recently completed a two-store test program of NCR's FastLane checkout platform, and will add the system in another five locations.

"Shopper response was extremely positive at the two locations where we piloted self checkout, which made the decision to deploy NCR FastLane in five more stores an easy one," Robert Ukrop, Ukrop's Super Markets Inc. president and chief executive officer, said in a news release. "Looking ahead, we anticipate expanding our self-checkout program further in the future."

FastLane allows grocery customers to checkout and bag their own orders, and pay through an automated process. The unit features a touchscreen user interface, scanner, payment peripherals for cash and debit/credit cards, and areas for unloading and bagging groceries.

Ukrop's operates 27 retail food stores, markets, and a distribution center in the Richmond area.
