Motorola upgrades mobile personal shopping device

June 12, 2014

Motorola has launched the fifth generation of its MC18 Personal Shopping device, which enables shoppers to scan items in a store and receive offers. Once they have completed their shopping, they pay at a self-service checkout terminal.

Motorola said in announcing the launch that its mobile personal shopping devices have been installed in more than 2,000 stores globally, accounting for nearly 1 million transactions per day. Retailers using this solution have reported an increased basket size of up to 30 percent, while gaining real-time visibility into what customers are buying, the company said.

The MC18 is designed for grocery stores, department stores, hypermarkets, wholesale membership clubs and mass merchandisers. Shoppers speed up their checkout by scanning items as they shop.

The MC18 has a 4-inch high resolution display, and can capture 1D or 2D barcodes, whether printed on paper or displayed on a mobile phone’s screen. It comes with Bluetooth Low-Energy technology that can be used by retailers for providing maps and coupons for their customers.

The device can also be used by store associates for product picking, processing online orders, inventory management and price checks.
