Minnesota is considering banning cryptocurrency ATMs at the urging of law enforcement. There are currently around 350 crypto ATMs in the state, according to a report by Fox 9.
The state passed a crypto ATM law in 2024 requiring operators to issue refunds to fraud victims along with a daily transaction limit of $2,000 for new users; however, several law enforcement agencies are arguing that scams are still occurring.
At a hearing on the topic, Larry Lipka, counsel for CoinFlip, said that banning crypto ATMs wouldn't stop scams.
"While I understand that scams are a problem, scams are a problem everywhere in this country," Lipka said. "They are a problem for crypto kiosks, they are a problem for wire transfers, and they are a problem for gift cards. But no one is here today saying we should ban exchanges or gift cards or wire transfers because scammers use them."
