Michigan county installs legal self-help kiosk

Wexford County, Michigan, plans to install a legal self-help kiosk inside its courthouse in Cadillac to assist people representing themselves in court, according to a Cadillac News report. The county Board of Commissioners accepted a $9,000 State Court Administrative Office grant to purchase and install the equipment.

The kiosk will provide legal forms, state publications and online resources, along with a private space for virtual meetings with Northern Michigan Legal Aid. It will also offer online rehabilitation resources two afternoons each week. The installation will include two computers, two printers, furniture and office supplies.

Judge Jason Elmore of the 28th Circuit Court said the service is intended to improve access to legal information, particularly for people who cannot afford an attorney. The county hopes to have the kiosk operating by the end of 2026, and Missaukee County residents will also be able to use it. Officials may seek funding for a second kiosk in Missaukee County if the initial project is successful.
