Megaplay offers music, movie, games previews

December 1, 2002

Shoppers can now play before they pay at Virgin Entertainment Group's 23 North American Megastores, where 132 new MegaPlay kiosks allow customers can sample up to 2.4 million CD tracks and 10,000 movie trailers.

The kiosks were placed in stores during the last week of November.

Customers simply scan the bar code of a CD, movie or game and access options on the kiosk's touch screen to select samples or read reviews from prominent music magazines including Spin and Rolling Stone.

Virgin began test piloting the kiosks, at $5,000 each, in 2001 and was among 11 companies featured in the April 29 issue of Newsweek's "Companies of the Future" cover story.

The kiosks were receiving 32,000 page views per week during the test period according to the company's research.

Virgin also launched its V.Shop kiosks in its stores in the UK last year, which allows customers to purchase and pay for products at a kiosk.
