McDonald's is piloting a system that allows customers to pay cash at digital ordering stations in a small number of U.S. stores, according to an Investopedia report. The kiosks, which bypass the traditional register, are designed to improve speed and accuracy of service.

The company is testing the system in less than 2% of its U.S. franchisees and has no plans for a full rollout at this time. Cashiers at participating stores will be redeployed to other roles, such as curbside pickup and table service.

McDonald's is hoping the new system will help to alleviate customer frustration with long lines and improve overall satisfaction.
