Massachusetts latest state to deploy license-renewal kiosks

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is enabling driver license renewal via eight touchscreen kiosks.

The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles is enabling driver license renewal via eight touchscreen kiosks, according to a SecureIDNews article.

Massachusetts is the seventh state to deploy the MorphoTrust kiosks.

"DMVs see this as a way to create a better customer service option," Senior Director of Marketing and New Market Development Margaret Bouse said in the article. "It encourages people to do the transaction themselves and gives a sense of instant gratification."

The kiosks include a camera that snaps a photo of each customer, using facial recognition technology to perform a one-to-one facial recognition match with the original record, the article said. A replacement license prompts customers to answer additional knowledge-based authentication questions.

The kiosk can ask if the customer wants to donate organs, register to vote and more. Customers complete the process via electronic signature pad and payment for the new ID. The kiosks issue a receipt and the license is mailed to the customer's residence. For states with over-the-counter issuance, customers can take the receipt to the counter and wait for staff to print their ID.
