Maryland expands self-service vehicle emissions kiosks

Maryland has opened a second self-service vehicle emissions testing kiosk in Gaithersburg and plans to add kiosks at seven more locations over the coming months, according to an MVA press release. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration and Department of the Environment said they chose the expansion sites based on customer demand.

The planned installations include second kiosks at the Bel Air and Beltsville MVA branches, along with kiosks in Largo, Annapolis and Clinton, at Baltimore City's East Vehicle Emissions Testing Station and at the Silver Spring testing station. The MVA said it will announce each kiosk as it opens.

Unlike staffed testing stations, the kiosks are available around the clock. A self-service inspection costs $26, compared with $30 for a staffed inspection. The MVA estimates that kiosks now handle about 20% of the state's emissions tests.
