September 30, 2014

Markets and Markets released an updated report on airport information systems in North America, Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and countries around the world, the company announced.

The report "Airport Information Systems Market by Airport Size, by Functions, by Cost, by Geography, Market Forecast & Analysis to 2014 - 2020" estimates that the global airport information systems market will generate $2.6 billion in 2014, with a CAGR of 4.76 percent, and a predicted growth of $3.49 billion by 2020. In 86 data tables and 67 figures across 178 pages, the report details growth and global presence strategies by market players, including agreements, acquisition, collaboration, joint ventures, mergers, new products and partnerships, the company said.

One of the primary reasons airports implement new information systems is to improve passenger experience, an indicator that airports are "cautious about the overall global, economic and aviation industry stability," the report said. Airport capacity was cited as a major incentive for IT investment in areas such as the Middle East and Africa, which have experienced recent passenger growth.

Kiosks for bag-tag printing are rapidly expanding, with 90 percent of European airports having updated or planning to deploy bag-tag kiosks by 2016. And Frankfurt (Germany) Airport passengers check-in at self-service kiosks at a rate of 37 percent, making the airport the largest user of real-time passenger and information systems.

The report reveals that the trend in self-service is increasing inside airports, and notes that some Italian airlines provide bag-tag and ticket scanning kiosks for passengers to use prior to boarding.

The Chinese aviation industry lists self-service technology as a major strategy to manage increasing passenger growth. In 2013, 8 percent of airports were using self-service kiosks. This is predicted to rise to 54 percent by 2016, the release said.
