Bentonville, Ark.¾Stocking a limited amount of inventory, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to venture into the lucrative world of major appliance sales for the first time. The key is interactive kiosks."urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> A host of General Electric products, including stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers, will go on sale in 12 stores by the year's end, the company announced. A bigger kiosk sales effort is expected in 2001.
Wal-Mart customers will order the appliances directly from GE warehouses using in-store, Web-enabled kiosks. All purchases will be sent directly to the consumer.
Offering appliances via kiosk will help Wal-Mart keep inventory at a minimum, reducing storage costs.
