MINNEAPOLIS - Lunds supermarkets newly-opened Plymouth, Minn. store is employing self-checkout, Web kiosks and advanced point-of-sale (POS) systems from NCR Corp., according to a news release issued by the company.
Lunds president and chief executive officer Tres Lund said that the investment in NCR technology will offer the customers more choices.
Shoppers who wish to pick up a few items and get in and out quickly now have the option to bypass the assisted service line and scan their own items. Shoppers can also search a Web kiosk for recipes or order deli items without having to wait for their number to be called, the release stated.
Shoppers who prefer cashier-assisted checkout lanes will move faster through the line. Lunds has incorporated the Advanced Checkout Solution (ACS) and high-speed scanners from NCR, which will speed transaction time and display a scrolling, itemized receipt for customers to view as the items are scanned.
Lunds is not the only store to incorporate NCR technology. KIOSKmarketplace reported recently that Ireland-based Superquinn supermarkets signed a Center of Excellence agreement with NCR in June. As part of the agreement, Superquinn is incorporating 76 NCR model 7401 Web kiosks in its 19 locations, testing NCR's DecisioNet electronic shelf labels and adding POS hardware such as scanners to its stores (see "Superquinn testing NCR's retail technology").
NCR is pursuing other Centers of Excellence agreements in central and southern Europe. Under the agreement, companies become exclusive users of NCR retail hardware and software, including kiosks.
Lunds is a subsidiary of Lund Food Holdings Inc., which owns and operates eight Lunds and 12 Byerly's retail food stores in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas.
