London store converts 60 percent of its checkout lanes to self-service

September 29, 2005

LONDON - NCR Corp. announced in a news release that a Tesco Metro store in London has converted 60 percent of its checkout positions to self-checkout by installing 12 NCR FastLane units.

The new self-checkouts went live earlier this month. They will provide Tesco with added flexibility to efficiently serve customers at all hours, through the store's busy lunchtimes and after-work peaks.

"Self-checkout has proved very popular with customers in other stores," said Jonathan Yelland, team leader for self-checkout at Tesco. "It will provide busy office workers in Cheapside with a convenient service and give them a choice of how to pay."

Tesco is the leading supermarket retailer in the United Kingdom. Its Tesco Metro stores are smaller outlets located in urban shopping districts, as compared with Tesco Superstores (supermarkets) and Tesco Extra Stores (hypermarkets).

"Self-checkout gives retailers on-demand capacity and unrivalled flexibility when it comes to staffing their stores," said Alberto Camuri, NCR's vice president for retail solutions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "We are delighted with the high level of customer acceptance for NCR FastLane at Tesco and the innovative way they are now using it to address different situations."

Tesco currently has self-checkout in 137 stores and intends to extend this to 220 by the end of the year.
