Library kiosks give vision impaired access to books

October 9, 2011

Since 2009, October in New Jersey has been designated as Blindness Awareness Month, and in recognition of the month, New Jersey State Library Talking Book & Braille Center has deployed about 40 Outspoken Library kiosks in local public libraries throughout the state, according to New Jersey Today.

The kiosk allows those who have impaired vision to download 800 audiobooks at the kiosk which they can play on a free listening device, said Adam Szczepaniak, director of TBBC.

"The Outspoken Library has helped us expand our services to new, underserved populations in New Jersey, especially veterans," Szczepaniak said in the story. "It will help to make a difference for those who, for whatever reason, have difficulty reading printed material."

At the local level, library staffs are available to demonstrate how the kiosk works, explain the eligibility, provide applications and explain the application process.
