Kansas City launches smart city initiative

May 9, 2016

Kansas City, Missouri, has officially launched its smart city initiative. The city partnered with Cisco, Sprint and Think Big Partners to deliver free Wi-Fi, interactive kiosks and other smart tools, according to a press release.

Sprint will offer residents free public Wi-Fi across more than 50 square blocks in the downtown area. Kansas City has deployed 125 smart street signs and 25 informational kiosks.

Wi-Fi connectivity along the KC Streetcar route will help keep smart lighting, kiosks and sensor technology operational. Smart lighting is designed to reduce overall power consumption and keep track of energy used.

"Kansas City has issued an open invitation to entrepreneurs — along with large companies looking to develop pilot partnerships — who are developing technologies that could improve city services," said Herb Sih, president of Think Big Partners.

"Kansas City is taking important innovative steps to further solidify our region as a center for technology," said Tim Cowden, president and CEO of the Kansas City Area Development Council. "This translates into more talented individuals locating here and significant economic growth."
