Outdoor advertiser JCDecaux has launched a line of self-service electric bikes that are powered by a 3-hour battery, according to a press release. With one fully charged battery, a rider can travel 6 miles.

Since the battery is portable, the rider can remove it and charge it without assistance, and the bicycle will alert its rider when the portable battery is low. In addition to these features, riders will have smartphone connectivity. Riders will pay a monthly fee for the bicycle and an online subscription.

The goal of these self-service bicycles is to provide alternate-transportation options for urban residents and to reduce harmful emissions.

JCDecaux has been extensively involved in the self-service bicycle industry, with 52,000 bicycles in circulation, the company said.

"JCDecaux's electric bikes provide an alternative solution, complementing other means of transport,"JCDecaux Co-CEO Jean-Charles Decaux said in a statement. "As France hosts the U.N. climate change conference, COP 21, this year, JCDecaux's self-service electric bikes, which are already operational, provide a sustainable alternative for city authorities, as well as encouraging low-emission travel and bringing about a real change in habits in urban areas."
