Instacart and Morrisons have forged a partnership that will introduce Instacart's Caper Carts, AI-powered smart carts, to the UK, according to a press release. This marks Instacart's first retail collaboration to deploy the technology in the country.
The Caper Carts will be available starting in early 2026 at a single Morrisons store, with the potential for a wider rollout in the future. The carts are designed to enhance the in-store shopping experience by allowing customers to scan items as they shop, track their running total and check out seamlessly. The carts feature interactive screens, built-in scales for weighing produce and AI-powered sensors.
The smart carts will be integrated with the Morrisons More Card loyalty program to provide customers with added savings and convenience.
"Shopping is no longer solely online or in-store — it's a hybrid of both — and Caper Carts offer a seamless way to combine the convenience and personalization of e-commerce with the inspiration and discovery that happens in physical stores," David McIntosh, chief connected stores officer at Instacart, said in the release.
Instacart's Caper Carts are part of the company's Connected Stores suite and are currently deployed in nearly 100 cities across 15 states in North America. The technology also provides retailers with opportunities for monetization and incremental basket growth through personalized deals and product suggestions.
