In Ontario, drug kiosk rollout awaits regulation
March 28, 2010
The Toronto Star reportsthat the Ontario government, in its passage late last year of Bill 179, approved the concept of "remote dispensing" of medicines through high-tech vending machines or pharmacy technicians in remote locations – all with electronic links to live pharmacists.
But PharmaTrust, Inc., the Oakville, Ontario, company piloting "Med Centre" kiosks, is concerned it's taking too long to develop the guidelines that must be in place before remote dispensing can be rolled out across Ontario.PharmaTrust officials also fear regulations being developed for the machines could make them "completely unviable."
