IBM displays a need for speed

February 9, 2002

NEW YORK - IBM (NYSE:IBM) has launched a new model to its NetVista kiosk line that offers faster processing power and a bigger touchscreen. Company officials expect the kiosk to work in a variety of retail environments.

The NetVista Model 150 features a 15-inch capacitive touchscreen with 1,024 by 768 resolution, a 550 MHz processor, and a 20 GB hard drive. Its predecessor, the Model 120, offers a 12-inch touchscreen with lower resolution, a 400 MHz processor, and a 10 GB hard drive. IBM will continue to offer the Model 120 along with the updated model.

The new model also features a sheet metal, powder-coated enclosure to resist damage. Other security features, including sealed buttons and slots and security locks, provide added deterrents, according to company officials.

"Today's consumers demand a convenient alternative for self-service technology, and retailers value reliability, flexibility, and investment protection," Tom Peterson, IBM retail store solutions general manager, said in a news release. "We are committed to helping retailers use technology to give their customers the one-to-one attention they want."

IBM launched the NetVista line in January of 2001 as a way of reaching the retail market (See story: New IBM kiosk designed with retail in mind). Among the companies that have deployed NetVista kiosks are British Airways, US Airways, and Canadian retailer Hudson's Bay Company.
