Hitachi chip feels the need for speed

July 9, 2002

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. on July 10 announced the introduction of a new flash memory device marketed for the digital camera and digital content kiosk sectors.

The HN29V1G91 is a 1GB AND-type monolithic flash memory device that can write at 10MB per second. Company officials said the memory chip is capable of recording two hours worth of CD-quality music files in about 13 seconds.

Victor Tsai, Hitachi product marketing manager for flash memory products, said the chip's speed was essential for writing for digital cameras that have high pixel counts. He also said the chip could be used with kiosks that offer downloadable digital content.

Samples of the HN29V1G91 will be available starting in October. The chip has a sample price of $65.

The chip is the first product built on Hitachi's proprietary Assist-Gate AND-type multi-level cell flash memory technology. That platform debuted at the 2001 International Electron Devices Meeting in Washington, D.C.
