German truckers now checking into self-service kiosks

According to freight and logistics news service ifw, a shipping container terminal in Hamburg, Germany, is the first in that country to introduce self-service check-in for truckers.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG, the logistics company operating the terminal, says its eight self-service booths will enable haulers to book-in containers in just more than two minutes.

After a pilot test phase, using the self-service terminals for processing of standard containers is now mandatory at the terminal, with exceptions only for special cargo such as hazardous goods or reefer containers.

Holger Mewes, CTA project manager, terminal development, said the goal is to process 70 percent of truckers through the self-service kiosks.

Self-service terminals will also be introduced at two other HHLA terminals in Hamburg, according to the ifw article.
