The East Tennessee Historical Society is seeking funds to continue the restoration a kiosk on the corner of Market Street and Clinch Avenue in Knoxville, which was originally assembled in 1912 as a weather kiosk. The kiosk has been reconstructed to share interesting facts about the area and nearby structures, according to knoxnews.com.
Similar weather kiosks, roughly 3,600 pounds, 7 feet high with glass windows, were installed in U.S. cities early in the 20th Century. The Knoxville kiosk also listed World War I casualties.
According to the News Sentinel, the kiosk was placed in the Greenwood Cemetery to post funeral announcements and cemetery maps after the weather service decided to stop maintaining it. It was returned to its original location and restored in 2004.
