The European Union is set to launch its Entry/Exit System (EES) in October, introducing mandatory biometric border checks for all non-EU travelers entering and exiting the Schengen area, according to a Biometric Update report. The digital system will capture facial biometrics, fingerprints and passport data to enhance security, track overstays and streamline immigration processes across member states.

The rollout follows confirmations from EU Commissioner Magnus Brunner and final approvals from key Schengen countries, including France, Germany and the Netherlands. The EES will be implemented over a 180-day period to prevent widespread delays.

However, the UK's busiest port, Dover, anticipates big change and potential delays. Port of Dover Chief Executive Doug Bannister has outlined procedures where drivers and coach passengers will park, exit vehicles and register biometrics at self-service kiosks on newly reclaimed land before proceeding to final passport checks.

While the EU border agency Frontex has developed a "Travel to Europe" app for pre-registration, Dover does not expect it to be operational during the initial EES rollout, meaning most travelers will rely on on-site kiosks.

"The app is ready to be used with the start of the EES in the coming autumn," Frontex Deputy Executive Director Uku Särekanno told the news outlet. "Frontex has done its part, developed a scalable and secure app. Now it is up to every Member State to integrate the app with its national systems."

Six months after the EES is fully live, non-EU travelers will also need to obtain pre-travel clearance via ETIAS, a system similar to the U.S. ESTA, costing €7 (US$8.21) initially. Airports across Spain and Portugal are also installing biometric systems, with some reports of initial delays due to increased passenger traffic. Travelers are advised to prepare for longer waits and potential teething troubles as the system beds in.
