Students at Nexton Elementary School in Summerville, South Carolina, can now "buy" a book using a token from a vending machine that was retrofitted to carry books instead of soda or snacks, according to a report in The Summerville Journal Scene. The machine was provided by the school's PTA, which raised the $5,000 to pay for the machine last year.
The teachers provide the tokens to the students in return for good behavior. The books range from pre-kindergarten through grade five.
The purpose was to surprise and motivate the students, which according to the teachers, is working.
The school bought the machine from a New York area vending equipment distributor, which customized the machine to include the school's logo and mascot.
