The Downtown Missoula Partnership has expanded its wayfinding system with the installation of six additional kiosks, bringing the total to 10 throughout the downtown area, according to an NBC Montana report. Each kiosk features a detailed map on one side and a historical interpretation panel on the other, aiming to improve navigation and highlight the city's past for both residents and visitors.
The project, part of the Missoula Comprehensive Wayfinding Plan adopted in 2013, involved a collaboration with Historical Research Associates for historical content and Art and Image Design LLC for the visual design. The kiosks are strategically placed to serve as both navigational aids and storytelling elements, enhancing the "sense of place" in downtown Missoula.
According to a statement from the Downtown Missoula Partnership, "Strategically placed throughout the heart of downtown, these kiosks serve as both navigational aids and historical storytelling elements, enhancing the sense of place for residents and visitors alike."
The kiosks are part of the "Downtown Legacy Trail" and complement existing pedestrian directional signs. Funding for the project was provided by the Business Improvement District and the Missoula Downtown Foundation. The 10 kiosks offer information on various historical aspects of downtown Missoula at specific locations.
