SAN FRANCISO -- Albertson's shoppers can now opt for self-service checkout, according to an article in SiliconValley.com.
The chain has installed U-sacn kiosks in 15 Bay Area Albertsons stores as part of its expansion.
According to the article, self-service checkout transactions are expected to reach $70 billion this year, up from $42 billion in 2003.
While now representing less than 5 percent of U.S. retail sales, acceptance of self-checkout is growing quickly. By 2007, Tennessee's IHL Consulting Group predicts, sales will reach $336 billion as more automated lanes are installed at grocers, discount chains and drug stores.
