Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-based Miraculins Inc., a medical diagnostic company focused on acquiring, developing and commercializing diagnostic tests and risk assessment technologies, announced the start of a pilot program with Lovell Drugs Ltd. and Pear Healthcare Solutions Inc. that will see the placement of the first stand-alone Scout DS diabetes screening kiosks in Lovell's retail pharmacy locations in Ontario beginning in February 2015.

The pilot intends to demonstrate that a stand-alone Scout DS diabetes screening kiosk can deliver a rapid, non-invasive diabetes screening clinic as well as generate ROI for pharmacies.

Miraculins designed its ROI model to be easily reproduced in other pharmacy settings, the company said, in order to build a business case for pharmacies to lease Scout DS kiosks.

The company hopes to see a dramatic increase in screenings and build education and awareness about type 2 diabetes, provide more effective management of disease and reduce diabetes related costs to the Canadian health care economy, according to a statement.

A Scout DS Test Operator will manage the kiosk and customers with an elevated score will receive a brief post-screening consultation with a pharmacist.

The kiosks will have the ability to screen 8-10 customers per hour, the company said. Participants will receive free screenings during the pilot in exchange for completing a short consumer health questionnaire via touchscreen tablet. The data collected is designed to allow a pharmacy to build out its revenue model and facilitate the delivery of retail revenue. Participants will also receive educational materials on diabetes and will be recommended to see a doctor if results are elevated
