Belgian retailer Colruyt Group has installed 454 Toshiba self-checkout systems across 150 stores as part of an ongoing expansion of its self-service technology, according to a press release.
The rollout includes Okay, Okay City, Spar Colruyt Group and Bio-Planet locations, with another 51 stores scheduled to receive the technology by the end of 2026. Additional installations are planned for 2027.
The deployment uses Toshiba's ELERA Self Service platform, combining TCx 810 checkout terminals, receipt printers and Datalogic scanning equipment. The systems allow customers to scan and pay for purchases independently while employees remain available to provide assistance. Colruyt Group has retained traditional staffed checkout lanes and does not use exit gates at its self-checkout locations, reflecting the retailer's emphasis on customer choice and trust.
Colruyt Group began introducing self-checkout at the four retail banners in 2024, targeting customers seeking faster transactions, particularly for smaller purchases. Kris Vanbellingen, of Colruyt Group, said the company considers employee assistance an important part of the self-service experience. Toshiba said the rollout demonstrates how retailers can expand checkout automation while maintaining personal service and offering shoppers a choice of payment methods.
