Outerwall Inc. announced at the Clinton Global Initiative Monday that it is committed to bringing in 2 million pounds of e-waste to its ecoATM recycling kiosks in the next three years.
The kiosks will accept mobile phones, tablets and related devices. Industry experts report that 15 pounds of e-waste is produced per person each year, Outerwall said.
"We can all make a tremendous impact if each person commits to reducing their personal e-waste footprint," said J. Scott Di Valerio, CEO of Outerwall, in the release.
Outerwall currently maintains 1,100 ecoATMS housed in retail venues. The company has repurposed 75 percent of e-waste collected so far and 25 percent has found a home in e-waste reclamation facilities. Collected devices are also auctioned worldwide at varying prices. The kiosks accept devices of any age and condition and will "identify, evaluate and price" it to determine the amount of cash to return to the user.
