Chicago-area hospitals putting salad-vending kiosks on the menu

Kiosk manufacturer Farmer's Fridge will be installing its salad vending kiosks in several hospitals throughout the Chicago area. Its goal is to provide healthier alternatives for patients and visitors.

Several Chicago-area hospitals are deploying salad-vending kiosks to improve the healthier meal and snack options available for patients and visitors, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. Kiosk manufacturer Farmer's Fridge will be installing its salad-vending kiosks in several hospitals throughout the Chicago area, starting with the first batch of kiosks in Northwestern Memorial Hospital .

The company plans to deploy more than 100 machines by next year. The salads will cost $8 each.

Venture capital startup GPV is providing funding for the salad dispensers.

"As a fund, GPV is targeting food innovations that will promote healthy living," GPV partner Nate Laurell said in a statement. "You can expect Farmer's Fridge to be a big name in convenient — and healthy — eating in the years to come."

Farmer's Fridge kiosks are also available at four 7-Eleven locations.
