Genesis Technology of Halifax, Nova Scotia, has deployed a kiosk system in six county jails in the U.S. that house 1,000 inmates, and CEO Chris Barker said the company is targeting entrance in institutions that can house 10,000 inmates by the end of 2014, according to an article on thechronicleherald.ca.
Prison inmates can use the kiosks to access their money and download it on a smart card that they can use to buy everything from cold drinks to shampoo. The software used in the kiosk serves as the bank for the inmates, keeping records of all their transactions, and also allows family and friends to deposit funds in an inmate's account.
Additionally, inmates can use the system to communicate outside of the prison or internally with the prison staff. Staff can monitor and control all the external communications, according to the article.
"By putting a kiosk in place, we can give (prisoners) all the services they need on a self-serve basis," said Barker in the article.
