California medical center installs medication disposal kiosk

Lompoc Valley Medical Center has installed a "MED-Project" medication disposal kiosk, the first in Santa Barbara County, according to the Lompoc Record. The kiosk has been placed near the LVMC cardiopulmonary and laboratory departments.

The Santa Barbara County safe drug disposal ordinance requires any producer of prescription and over-the-counter drugs to participate in a drug stewardship program for collection and disposal of unwanted medications.

Disposing of medications properly is a way to prevent accidental misuse of medicine, especially children, said Dr. Hossam Gamal, LVMC director of pharmacy services.
