Boston bike-share program to offer helmets via kiosk

June 3, 2013

Beginning in July, Boston's Hubway bicycle sharing system will gain a companionkiosk that offers riders an option to rent a helmet via a solar-powered, touchscreen vending solution. According to a post on psfk.com, Boston is the first city in the country to offer helmet rentals via a vending machine.

The concept began as part of a research project between 12 MIT undergrads in 2011. The current iteration enables cyclists to rent a helmet for $2 and return it at the same destination where they are returning their rented bicycle.

From there, the helmet is returned to the company's headquarters to be inspected and sanitized before being sent back out for redistribution.
