Best Buy kiosks use music theory to recommend CDs

San Mateo County Times: Need a recommendation for a new music CD? Forget your friend. Use a sophisticated computer program that employs music theory to match up similar-sounding songs, bands and albums.

Best Buy has already begun rolling out kiosks that employ the technology in certain stores nationally, but not in the Bay Area. Powering the machines is software from Savage Beast Technologies, and venture capitalists are betting millions the company's technology will be a huge success.
