Barnes & Noble superstore to include kiosk

March 21, 2002

NEW YORK - Bookseller Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) is opening a superstore in Tracy, Calif., according to a news release issued by the company. But most importantly, the 27,424 square-foot store, expected to open in May 2002, will contain a kiosk.

The Red Dot electronic music catalog, a touch-sensitive customer kiosk, is used in stores now. It shows customers the location of CDs in the store and lets customers sample 30 seconds of music.

The Tracy store will also feature other high tech services, such as an Internet service counter that allows customers to order books or other product through the Barnes & Noble.com Web site, and have it delivered to the location of their choice (home, office or the store).

Barnes & Noble Inc. operates 569 Barnes & Noble and 339 B. Dalton bookstores. With its acquisition of Babbage's Etc. and Funco, Inc., it has also become a nationwide operator of video game and entertainment software stores.
