Baguette-baking kiosk making news in France

August 21, 2011

A baker in France has rolled out a 24-hour automated baguette dispenser, promising warm bread at any time of the day or night, according to the Associated Press.

The baker, Jean-Louis Hecht, calls his bread-baking and –dispensing kiosks "the bakery of tomorrow," but so far has deployed only two — one in Paris, another in a town in northeastern France.

The kiosks finish baking partially pre-baked baguettes and dispense the hot loaves for just 1 Euro.

The first kiosk sold 1,600 baguettes in the first month, and nearly 4,500 last month, and Hecht told the AP that at that rate the $71,000 kiosk will pay for itself in the first year.
